Tree Planting Campaign in Sri Lanka

I remember in my young days (not that I am old now :) ! ) when I was still schooling, there were tree planting campaigns to make city (Colombo) greener. There were tree planting ceremonies, with its usual pageantry where trees were planted on the side of roads by VIPs from Government. Wonder anybody had kept track of what happened to all those trees planted then?

Anyway, I the idea of plating new treas is noble one as, it not only makes the city greener and give a pleasant sight, it also help the cause of reducing the green house effect. Further, its a natural air purifier by recycling the air taking in carbon dioxide (CO2) and releasing oxygen (O2) in to the environment. The green house effect has been the cause of Global warming, which is melting the polar ice caps.

The result of the construction we experienced between 2002 and 2004, lot of concrete structures have come instead of trees, and Colombo has become a concrete jungle.

I hope there is more initiative by the government, like the Rain Harvesting Initiative, to plant trees in the major cities, so we as citizen of this country will have access to uncontaminated air to breath.
