What happens to E-Waste?

This an Greenpeace video (http://www.greenpeace.org) I found in Youtube.

India has become a hub for recycling of electronic item. Electronic items such as Computer mother, copper wires are recycled in order to produce metals such as copper and even gold.

The recycling are done in haphazard way, with no regard to the safety and health of the workers, or the environment.

Greenpeace is also accusing the western nation (specially the USA) for dumping its waste in third world countries, violating international regulations (the Basel Convention) No wonder the Americans are skeptical and even denying the fact about Global warming!

Want to Save the world ? - Plant A Tree

Green House gases has been blamed for the cause of Global Warming, and mostly man made gases. Emissions from vehicles, factories, burning waste, farming etc, are increasing the level of CO2 and other greenhouse gases in the earth's environment.

But, what can we do as a citizen, to stops these greenhouse gases from damaging our fragile environment?

Planting a tree can help in reducing greenhouse gases, as trees can soak up the harmful greenhouse gases and other pollutants.

Cutting down trees or deforestation has been blamed for the increase in the level of CO2 in the environment, which has resulted in earth's temperature increasing.

Planting a tree will not only help in soaking up the greenhouse gases in the urban environment, but also provide shade in what scientists are calling urban heat islands.

But there rises another problem, by simply planting any tree, will you be able to reduce these greenhouse gases? The answer to that question is No. Some trees can even aggravate the situation, than reducing the gases.

According to an news item which I read at www.abcnews.go.com on the subject of "Wanna Save the World? Make Sure You Plant the Right Tree", not all trees are the same. There are trees which can contribute to air pollution by emitting volatile organic compounds (compounds containing carbon), such as isoprene, which help form ozone, a health hazard.

So, what trees do we need to plant. Researchers havecame up with a list of 31 species, including American basswood, dogwood, Eastern white pine, Eastern red cedar, gray birch, red maple and river birch. That combination, they found, would increase carbon sequestration by 86 percent, and reduce the emission of volatile compounds by 88 percent. (www.abcnews.go.com). But these plants were tested in the US and the results will be different in different regions. Further research needs to be done in finding out the best tree, which will suit a region.

But planting a tree is only a short term solution, as trees will eventually die and rotting trees can release CO2 into the environment. Therefore planting trees will only buys us time, for us to reduce green gas emission. The less we emit greenhouse gases in to the environment, the less we to have a solution to absorb them. The saying "Prevention is better than cure" sums it up quite well.

Deforestation and Global Warming

Deforestation has become the major reason for Global Warming, more than from vehicle emission. Trees are natural absorbent of CO2 which has been blamed for increase in global temperatures.

According toAllianz Knowledge (http://knowledge.allianz.com/), "one day of emissions from deforestation equals 12.5 million people flying from London to New York, is that forests absorb carbon dioxide from the air and store it as carbon in the trees and the soil. Tropical forests alone store a quarter of all the carbon on land".

As the world's population grows, the demand for land for housing and farming, has increased. This has resulted in more forested land being turned into bare lands for housing and farming. Tress are being cut and burned, resulting in the CO2 emission. Stripped of its tree cover, the soil leaks CO2 and sometimes methane. Deforestation is a double blow to the climate, which loses a carbon sink and gains nothing but more greenhouse gases. (http://knowledge.allianz.com/).

Deforestation, has been blamed for lack of rainfall. Trees helps cloud formation. Further burning of trees can also prevent cloud formation as a result of soots from the burning trees. Deforestation is also blamed for soil erosion, which can lead to landslides during heavy rains.

Deforested land used for cattle farming can even cause further damages to the environment. Cattle farming has its fair share in releasing green house gases in the environment.

Governments needs to act to prevent more deforestation. Forests needs to be protected. The need to plant a tree for each tree felled is very important, if we are to preserve our forests and our environment. City planners need to look at making their city more greener. The solutions are there, but we need to act upon it.

Reuse or Recycle ?

Global Warming, climate change has resulted in the emphasis on reusing or recycling of resources at our offices and homes.

But which is better reuse or recycle?

Reusing and recycling are different from each other, even though bottom line is that, we are reusing the same resource. The difference here is that, in recycling there is a process involved before it can be reuse it.

The answer to the question of whether to reuse or recycle will depend on how we are going to use the end product. But there is a cost element in recycling and it maybe expensive to recycle than buying it new. Recycling papers is expensive than using new paper.

Furthermore, some recycle process can even harm the environment. Bleaching of paper to remove the ink, means harmful chemicals (ink) are released into the environment (unless they are properly disposed off - which is an additional cost). But the recycling process has to be done, if the paper is to be used for printing.

On the other hand, reusing won't cost a cent for the user, as there is no process involved. There are many ways office resources can be reused.
  • Use of fountain pens (only the ink needs to be refilled) instead of disposable plastic pens.
  • Use pens which has refills (if you think that using fountain pens are old fashioned or messy)
  • Use glass bottles instead of disposable water bottles. They last longer and are healthier than plastic.
  • Use natural indoor plants at your office instead the artificial plants. The natural plants will not only beautify (even though the artificial ones can also do the same) but also can purify your office environment (air).
Using a compost bin at home is one way of disposing you waste or reusing your waste. The waste is naturally converted as compost, which can be used for your garden.

Therefore if you have an option, where reuse is possible instead of recycling it, I suggest you reuse it. Think of reusing, the next time you purchase any item for you home or office. Its a small part you can do to protect our environment.

Revealed: the secret evidence of global warming Bush tried to hide

Photos from US spy satellites declassified by the Obama White House provide the first graphic images of how the polar ice sheets are retreating in the summer. The effects on the world's weather, environments and wildlife could be devastating.

This should silence the skeptics of Global Warming or at least something about. Global Warming is real. We need to act on it.

The mulching lawn mower

I read about this lawn mower while browsing on the subject of recycling. This lawn mower not only cut the grass but is designed so as to leave behind finely shredded grass clippings.

The traditional lawn mower on the other hand, leaves the clipped grass on the lawn. These clipped grass will have to be collected (probably in a plastic bag) and disposed off.

The mulching lawn mower eliminates the necessity for collecting and disposing the clipped grass. The grass clipping once shredded are small enough to be left in the ground itself, and will not harm the grass, which is the case if you leave the clipped grass using the traditional lawn mowers.

The mulched grass will also fertilize your lawn, saving the cost of fertilizing your lawn. Its also mean less work for you

Global Warming

Animation on Global Warming. Its a challenge. But we can achieve it.

Burning Garbage at Home

Burning of garbage at homes, has been a common practice specially in Sri Lanka, as it is a cost effective way of disposing garbage.

The most common item burned at the backyards of homes is paper and sometime even polythene. Fallen leaves or branches of trees after being trimmed are also being burned. Most of time, the garbage are burnt without using a burn barrel, wood stove, or fire-pit The resulting ashes are left on the soil.

The green gases (CO2) released to the environment also contributes to Global Warming.

Burning of garbage at home is dangerous to human health and can harm the environment (pollution), according Minnesota Pollution Control Agency.

The agency states following reason for making garbage burning as hazardous for us and the environment:
  • Small fires mean big trouble. Typical home fires are small and inefficient. They produce a lot of smoke, as well as a variety of toxic substances—even burning seemingly harmless materials like paper.
  • Garbage has changed. Today's household trash contains a lot of plastics and paper treated with chemicals, coatings, and inks.
  • Ash that remains contains concentrated amounts of these toxic materials that can blow away or seep into the soil and groundwater.
(Source : http://www.pca.state.mn.us)

The alternative for burning garbage
  • Recycle - paper, glass can be recycled.
  • Produce Compost. By using compost bins, garbage can be turned in to compost. Waste such as food, waste from the yard (fallen leaves) can be turned into compost. The resulting compost can used for your garden.
  • Re-use items such as polythene which are not bio degradable. Buy less polythene and re-use whatever you at home.

Is Global Warming a Myth

I have been reading on the web, about Global Warming being a myth, and being a conspiracy. I have seen the same on YouTube as well.

I have always been a firm believer that the phenomenon called "Global Warming" is truly happening and that we, human beings, have to take the blame for it. But why deny it and say it as a myth? As a personal opinion, I am not surprised that it is coming from the Americans than anybody else, as they have been tagged as the world's worst polluters of the environment.

The target of the people who are calling it a myth seems to the former US vice president Al Gore, after he made the documentary "An Inconvenient Truth". Maybe its because, America is not affected by it or not facing any danger from Global Warming, like countries like Maldives, a island nation which is facing threat of being wiped off the map, if the Global temperature rises.

I've read an article titled "Taking on Climate Change Myth and Skeptics" on the Allianz Knowledge website, which states correctly that the reason for the people to be skeptic is that, quote "these people primarily do not like the consequences of the scientific findings: that we need to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions." unquote. Its quite simple, how much are you willing to sacrifice in reducing global warming? Its easy for them to convince themselves (and others too) that its all a myth and than to face the truth.

If we weigh the cost taking action against Global Warming and the Consequence of not taking action (when we still have the opportunity to do so) , the latter will weigh higher. Even though this is just my personal opinion (I am not a scientist) I believe there are people who will endorse this (people who really care about the earth we are living in.

Are We Ready for the Challenge

This is video I found in YouTube, on the challenge of fighting Climate change. The challenge we are facing is effect of CO2 having on the Climate which Global Warming.

The question the video is posing is "Are we ready for the challenge". But there are people who dispute that Global warming and climate change, by calling it pack of lies. Who is telling the truth?

Energy Saving Bulbs

An ENERGY STAR qualified compact fluorescent light bulb or CFL uses 75 percent less energy and lasts about 10 times longer than an ordinary bulb.

A CFL bulb can typically last for about 8,000 hours. In comparison, an ordinary light bulb lasts about 900 hours only. Taking into account of its energy efficiency and longer life, a CFL outperforms an ordinary light bulb by more than 30 times. A 25-watt CFL bulb is as bright as a 100-watt light bulb.

On the other hand LED or (Light emitting Diode ) which less energy. Currently LED lights are now being used for traffic lights in Sri Lanka. The exact extent of energy saved by using LED lights are not caluclated yet, but researchers believe that it will use 1/3 of energy that is used to power a CFL bulb.

Insulated Partition for your office

The use of insulated partition for the office could bring down the office energy cost (Electricity), As it will keep the room cool even though the outside temperature is higher.

The insulation (like in a fridge) will prevent the outside room temperature from heating the room, which means the air conditioning will work lesser. As a result the electricity usage will come down.

The lesser we use energy to cool our office, we will be able to have lesser carbon footprint. It can be used as a competitive advantage, as a company being environmentally friendly

Greenhouse Effect and Global Warming

The Greenhouse effect has resulted in the earth getting warmer. The effect of this is extreme temperature causing droughts in some parts of the world.

The greenhouse effect is how the earth is kept warm, as natural green gas trap the heat from the sun. Without this effect the earth will be a cold place to live.

The natural gas in the atmosphere is enough to keep the earth warm enough for us live. But due rapid industrialization, in addition to the natural gases (for example generated by trees)there are man made gases released into the atmosphere, resulting more heat getting trapped, resulting in Global Warming. The biggest gas emitter are vehicles we use, secondly are the factories.

Carbon Dioxide (CO2) has been attributed as major cause of Global warming, though it has become a debatable issue, with some (Americans) calling it a conspiracy.

The proponent of Carbon Dioxide (CO2) being the cause of Global Warming is former US Vice President Al Gore. He detailed in his documentary "The Inconvenient Truth" how the effect of CO2 is causing the earth to hot up. But his views has been disputed.

The following is the trailer of his film (documentary)

Disposable Products : Convenience or A Hazard to the Environment?

Should disposable products be considered as convenience or a hazard to the environment?

These mostly made of plastic and some paper are becoming the cause for environmental pollution. Plastic disposable items, such as disposable plastic bottles (used for drinking water), disposable razors (which are not bio degradable) and paper based item such as paper plates, even though convenient for use, not only pollutes the environment but puts more burden in disposing them in proper manager.

Even though recycling is an option, but the cost of recycling plastic overrides the benefit you can get from recycling.

Considering the cost of recycling plastic and its effect on the environment, we should try to reduce the use of more plastic by reusing them, by using the traditional razor blades where you can replace the blades only, instead of throwing the whole thing.

Our Social Responsibility Towards the Environment

What is our social responsibility as a citizen in protecting the environment? How much are we contributing in the fight against, say Global Warming, Climate Change, Overuse of the Earth Resources?

Well its not rocket science to understand in what way we can contribute towards preserving our environment and mother earth.

Small steps such as by reducing waste at our office, homes, in how we use paper, use of unnecessary lights, etc, can contribute towards this cause.

Do we think of the environment before taking a printout (do I really need to take this printout?) or do we off our Air conditioning when we go out, do we use energy saving lights?

This is also applicable to our homes as well as, how often do we see lights, air conditioning and fans left on, when there is no one occupying the room (living room, dining room, bed room) ?

These are ways in which we can contribute, however small its is, towards preserving our environment.

By the way it is "OUR ENVIRONMENT" and we need to protect it.

Indoor Plants and Clean Office Environment

I have read on several websites the benefits of having indoor plants for a cleaner environment, specially in an air conditioned environment. An air conditioned environment which is totally sealed are filled with VOCs, or volatile organic compounds, which can be hazordus to our health

According the Minnesota Department of health in the U.S., lists the following health effects from VOC exposure: Eys/Nose irritation * Throat irritation * Headaches * Nausea / Vomiting * Dizziness * Asthma exacerbation Chronic * Cancer * Liver damage * Kidney damage * Central Nervous System damage (source : http://www.articlesbase.com)

As early as 1980, Dr. Wolverton working for the NASA space program discovered that indoor plants could remove VOCs from sealed test chambers. This was part of a NASA study into clean air inside closed life support systems.

In 1990 Dr. Wolverton in association with the Plants for Clean Air Council in the U.S. tested fifty indoor plants for their ability to remove various VOCs from sealed test chambers. These finding were published in Dr. Wolverton’s book “ECO friendly house plants”, published in 1996. (source : http://www.articlesbase.com)

Energy Saving Tips for the Office

Here are some energy tips for the office:

Air Conditioning - If your air conditioning in your office can be controlled by a remote, keep its temperature at 27, so it will it automatically knock off the air conditioning as soon as the room temperature comes to 27 degrees. This means the Air conditioner will not be working continuously. This will not only save on the electricity bill, you are also contributing in a small way (well in a tiny way) in reducing use of thermal energy (most of the electricity is generated by it) which mean less emissions are released into the atmosphere.

Office Lights - Off your lights in your cubicle, room if you going out for lunch, meetings etc.

Computer Monitors - If your are using the old CRT monitors, switch them off when you leave your room, even for a short while.

As the saying goes, little drops of water makes the might ocean. Your small contribution can mean a lot if done collectively. So Good Luck!

Tree Planting Campaign in Sri Lanka

I remember in my young days (not that I am old now :) ! ) when I was still schooling, there were tree planting campaigns to make city (Colombo) greener. There were tree planting ceremonies, with its usual pageantry where trees were planted on the side of roads by VIPs from Government. Wonder anybody had kept track of what happened to all those trees planted then?

Anyway, I the idea of plating new treas is noble one as, it not only makes the city greener and give a pleasant sight, it also help the cause of reducing the green house effect. Further, its a natural air purifier by recycling the air taking in carbon dioxide (CO2) and releasing oxygen (O2) in to the environment. The green house effect has been the cause of Global warming, which is melting the polar ice caps.

The result of the construction we experienced between 2002 and 2004, lot of concrete structures have come instead of trees, and Colombo has become a concrete jungle.

I hope there is more initiative by the government, like the Rain Harvesting Initiative, to plant trees in the major cities, so we as citizen of this country will have access to uncontaminated air to breath.

Garbage Management at Home in Sri Lanka

The Municipalities in in Sri Lanka, recently started promoting waste management at home, where they were encouraging people to use compost bins to dispose the waste. By this process, valuable compost is produced using the organic components of household waste that we dismiss as being spent, useless, worthless, or in excess of our needs.

This also reduces the burden the municipality is facing in collecting waste as well disposing the. The Colombo Municipality is facing a sever problem of finding a place to dump wast, and was a result garbage has been left uncollected for days, creating an eyesore in the city.

The solution or at least a part solution is to encourage householders to install compost bins at their homes for the disposal of their waste. The resulting compost can be used either for their home garden or sell it to a company who is manufacturing compost. A source of revenue during time of recession.

There are different types of home-composting bins are available in the market, which are manufactured from plastic, metal or concrete rings. Concrete bins have been identified as the most cost-effective and environmentally friendly solution when compared to other designs.

Arpico is one such company in manufacturing plastic compost bins Sri Lanka.

Vehicle Emission Testing Compulsory in Sri Lanka

Vehicle emission testing has become compulsory for all vehicles in Sri Lanka (except for brand new vehciles, which less than one year old). The push for compulsory vehicle emission testing started with the petition submitted to Supreme Court in 1998 with an assertion to breath uncontaminated air.

Even though the government initiated the legislation to enforce vehicle emission testing in 2000, it was made compulsory for the renewal of the license in 2008. All vehicles needed to be tested, in order to obtain the annual license to use the vehicle, which is issued by the Department of Motor Traffic.

The Gazette notification published in 2008 states "No motor vehicle manufactured, assembled or designed in Sri Lanka or any motor vehicle imported into Sri Lanka shall be registered with the Commissioner of Motor Vehicles unless such vehicle complies with the vehicle exhaust Emission Standards contained in the National Environmental (-Air Emission, Fuel, and Vehicle Importation Standards) Regulation No.1 of 2003 made under the National Environmental Act, No 47 of 1980 and published in Gazette Extraordinary No. 1295/11 of June 30,2003…."

No license will be issued to vehicles which fails the emission test, till necessary repairs are done for safe emission

There are two private companies selected by the Government to carry out Vehicle Emission Testing in Sri Lanka. They are
CleanCo Lanka, a subsidiary of Akbar Brothers, and Laugfs Eco Sri.

The rates for vehicle emission testing are as follows:

Rain Water Harvesting to become Law in Sri Lanka

The old age technology of rain water harvesting is to be revived in Sri Lanka, with the Government of Sri Lanka seeking to make Rain Water Harvesting as mandatory for new buildings in the country.

The benefit which the government is looking at, is to minimize the usage of pipe borne water for secondary purpose, such as gardening etc. This will reduce the demand for natural water from the country's main water storage.

The other benefits are, that it will ease the pressure on storm water drainage, reduce cost on treating water and pumping it homes and reduce the flooding of roads during the rain season.

The law will include that new architectural plans for houses should also include provision for rain water harvesting.

Rain Water Harvesting

This is a video which I found in YouTube promoting Rain Water Harvesting in India . Its about the concept of preserving rain water, and as a citizen of your country you also should contribute to that cause.

Recycling as an Community Project

St. Laurence's Church, a catholic church in Colombo, Sri Lanka, has initiated community project to collect trash (paper, glass, etc) to raise funds as well as to encourage its members to recycle.

Aptly named as the "Cash thru Trash" project, it is encouraging its parishioners to collect their old news papers, glass bottles, etc which can be recycled and hand them over to the church. The collected "Trash" are sold to a recycling firm. The revenue from the sale is used for the church's community work.

Collecting garbage and disposing them has become a burden for the city's Council. The "Cash Thru Trash" initiate, can somewhat reduces that burden. This is an good initiative on the part of the Church, to raise funds for its community activities, but it's playing its part in protecting the earth precious resources.

Rain Water Harvesting for your Garden

Ever thought of how much you are spending on watering your plants and wash your car? Well the idea of rain water harvesting got me thinking, that I could save some sort of money by storing rain water (which you get for free).

If you can store the rain water and use it for your gardening and may be to wash your car, you are contributing your part in saving the precious water which is pumped to your home from the water reservoir. Specially when your country is facing a water shortage. For sustainable development of a country (as well as globally) we need protect our environmental resources by by not overusing it, and clean water is one most precious resources we have on earth.

A simple system of harvesting rain water is to use the home's gutters to direct the water (from the rain water which falls on the roof) to a water tank.

By collecting the rain water, which otherwise will go into the city's drainage, you are also preventing the city's drainage from getting flooded. Which means our roads won't get that much flooded, well at least in a small way.

Recycling - An New industry

The hottest topic of these days i sustainable development. How can we develop our cities, businesses without overusing the earth resources. As everybody knows (which I am assuming) that the earth resources are limited and the more we used it, its becoming depleted. If we use those resources at a haphazard way, there won't be much left of the earth resources for the future generation.

So, how are we going to sustain developments and at the same time protect the earth fragile resources?

One way of doing that (according to my thinking) is to go for recycling. As I said earlier in my blog article (Re-usable shopping bags) polythene can be recycled. Glass and paper are most popular recyclable items at present. The more we use recycled items, we are keeping the resources which need to make these items, say for glass, for the future generation.

We need to find more products which can be recycled. Which comes to my topic of Re-cycling as an industry. This is a good business opportunity for anyone who is interested in recycling and who has the knowledge on this subject.

Necessary government legislation should be there to encourage recycling and to use recycled materials. And at the same government should give incentives for those companies who use recycled materials at their offices. This will encourage companies to enter into the business of recycling as well.

Re-usable Shopping Bags

Polythene has become a environmental issue, as it not only pollutes the soil but also block the city's drain, causing havoc during the rain seasons. The polythene bags mostly used by shops, including the supermarkets has become a necessary evil, which is a very convenient way for packing goods.

But the environmental concerns regarding the use of polythene has given reason for not using using then and instead used re-usable shopping bags.

The reusable shopping bags, even though all super markets have introduced them (you have to pay for the bags initially ) seems to be not that popular among the supermarkets' customers. They (the customers) will have to bring those bags to the supermarkets, which is inconvenient specially when you are coming from your office.

Even though its inconvenient, the price we may have to pay my damaging the environment by the use of polythene, makes the use of re-usable shopping bags justified.

Variable Data Printing

Variable data printing is the term used by companies who are in to printing, where the data printed differs from page to page. Unlike the traditional offset printing, where the same data (be it text or image) is printed. Variable data printing encompasses text only.

Example of Variable Data Printing or VDP are statements/bills/Invoice sent to customers by Banks, telecommunication, Water, electricity companies. The data are mainly printed in laser printer, even though the stationery's (letterheads) will be printed on offset printers.

Printing Solutions Ltd (http://www.printingsol.webs.com) is one such company providing VDP solutions to companies in Sri Lanka. The whole process is outsourced to Printing Solutions, where the printing of customers data (VDP data) and posting of the printed statements to the customers are completely handled by them.

Printing Solutions have introduced innovative features in their statement printing service, such as Two column printing, Colour advertisements, customised Customer care messages, PDF file generation.

Wind Powered Elecricity for homes

I am looking ways to harness the wind power to generate electricity for my home or any home. The idea is to fix a fan, big enough to rotate a motor to generate electricity. This will be used to charge a battery, which should have enough voltage to power the home lights (CFL lights) and radio and possibly the fan.

The result will be that you will be generating your own electricity without paying a cent (Other than the initial capital cost), which otherwise you will be paying to the electricity company.

The hitch here is finding a fan and fixing at a height where the wind speed will be high. Another idea is to fix a inverter to the battery (output) to step up the electricity generated, so it can be used to power say a Television?.

This will not only bring the electricity cost down, but eliminate the nuisance of the power cuts.

Most Polluting Companies in the World

It isn't surprising that the top most companies who are the worst polluters of the environment are from the USA. Protected by the pro-business policies of the Republican party these companies are allowed to freely pollute the environment.

Former President George W Bush's nullification of the Kyoto Protocol, which was signed by former president Bill Clinton during his term of office, exemplifies the disregard the American businesses has for the protection of the environment.

The reason for this, is their inability to compete with other countries in terms of price, if they are to meet the higher standards set by other countries in environmental protection, namely Japan. The USA has lowest emission standards in the world. Japan on the other hand has the highest standards for emission levels, which is why all Japanese cars are fuel efficient. Most American cars are labeled as gas guzzlers.
According an article on Condé Nast Portfolio website (http://www.portfolio.com/news-markets/national-news/portfolio/2008/02/19/10-Worst-Corporate-Polluters) the Americans have been labeled as the worst polluters in the world. Almost all of these companies have included green policies in their CSR policies. The writer ask, what all these green policies really mean. Even though some companies have rebutted the assertion of being labeled as polluters.
More to come on this subject. :)

Organic Food

This is another subject I wish to touch upon. We need safe foods, which is free from chemicals which can harm our health. The definition of organic foods (my definition) is that it contains no chemicals. Chemicals such as artificial fertilisers, pesticides etc...
